What Readers Want to Know
The letters that reach the archive tend to circle the same handful of puzzles. Here are our answers, evidence first and speculation clearly labelled.
The Questions in the File
What do "open" and "explained" mean on a case card?
Explained means a mechanism is supported by direct evidence and broadly accepted by researchers. Open means the central question still has no supported answer. A popular theory alone never moves a case to explained.
Was the Dyatlov Pass incident really solved?
A delayed slab avalanche, supported by 2021 modelling and a 2020 Russian prosecutors' review, is the best-supported explanation, though some researchers still dispute it. See the Dyatlov file.
Has the Voynich manuscript been decoded?
No. Many decipherments have been announced, but none has been accepted by specialists. The vellum dates to 1404–1438. See the history file.
Who was the Somerton Man?
In 2022 genetic genealogy identified him as Carl Webb, a Melbourne electrical engineer. His cause of death remains unknown.
Did the Wow! signal come from aliens?
Nobody knows. The 1977 signal never repeated, so no explanation, natural or artificial, has been confirmed.
How do the Death Valley sailing stones move?
A 2014 study showed thin panes of ice, pushed by light winds after rare rain, slide the stones across Racetrack Playa.
What happened to the Roanoke colonists?
It is unknown. The carved word CROATOAN suggests they moved to Croatoan Island or joined local communities, but no find has confirmed it.
Why include rumours at all?
Rumours are part of each case's history. We label them clearly as speculation so readers can see how stories grow beyond the evidence.
Can I suggest a case or a correction?
Yes. Use the case report tool on the Write In page and email the result to [email protected].
